"The vineyard terraces of the Lavaux region"
Issue date: 9th September 2011

Sights of Switzerland

The vineyard terraces of the Lavaux region on the northern shore of Lake Geneva have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 and have long been an inspiring sight for artists, tourists and local residents. This monumental construction, with some 15 kilometres of walls that terrace slopes with gradients ranging from 13 to 43%, was the work of 12th-century Cistercian monks. This marvellous region is indeed worthy of the philatelic tribute created by watercolour artist Bernard Völlmy who has captured all its beauty on his three-part panoramic special stamp.
