The 20 CHF “Vreneli” is probably Switzerland’s best-known coin. The coins were issued between 1897 and 1936, in 1947 and in 1949.
Real gold was used to produce the gold Vreneli coin (high face value of 6.00 Swiss Franc). The stamp is shaped like a coin and is perforated. The embossing gives the stamp the appearance of a real coin.
The real coins were designed by the sculptor and medal designer Fritz Ulisse Landry (1842-1927 from Neuchâtel), whose signature, "F. Landry" appears on the coin below the portrait.
The Swiss Goldvreneli’s three different coin versions all show an image of Vreneli, the delightful “Swiss Miss”. Around Vreneli’s neck is a garland of flowers. The woman’s dress is embroidered with Edelweiss. In the background a picture of the Swiss Alps is depicted.
It is not confirmed, but the contours of the mountain at the right which is also depicts on the illustration, looks in number of ways, like the unique north-face of the Matterhorn.
