"Descent from Alpine pastures in Appenzell"
Issue date: 3rd September 2009
Sights of Switzerland

Moving cows to and from alpine pastures (or “Alpfahrt”) is an Appenzell custom and a red-letter day for man and beast. Many places celebrate the descent to lower pastures (“Alpabfahrt”) in late summer, when the cows are brought down from the mountains. The three special Swiss Post stamps showcase this spectacle and provide an insight into this custom with its many different facets.
