"150th Anniversary of the Birth of Léon Bakst (1866-1924)"

Leon Bakst (born as Lev (Leib) Samoilovich Rosenberg in Grodno, Belarus) was a famous Russian artist, set designer and book illustrator. The miniaturesheet shows a portrait of Leon Bakst and the landscape painting "View with cypress trees", watercolor on paper, dated 1907, size 29 x 44.5 cm.

“Landscape with Cypresses” reflects a more mature period in his work when he was in 1907 together with the artist Valentin Serov made a trip to Greece. During the journey, Bakst creates a series of brilliant splashes of Mediterranean landscapes.  According Tretyakov Gallery Magazine the route took them through Kiev, Odessa and Constantinople to Athens, Delphi, Patras, Kandia, Olympia, Mycenae and to the islands of Crete and Corfu.
