The Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation and situated in the southern part of the Northern Territory. It is together with the Katja Tjuta a major landmark in the Uluru-Kata-Tjuta-Nationalpark (formerly Ayers-Rock-Nationalpark).

The first European to actually visit the rock was surveyor William Gosse on the 19th of July, 1873. He named it Ayers Rock after Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia at the time.
