The Ennstal Alps borders in the north to the Upper Austrian Prealps, in the north-east to the Ybbstal Alps, in the east to the Hochschwab Group, in the south-east to the Lavanttal Alps, in the south to the Seckauer Tauern and Rottenmann and Wölz Tauern and in the west to the Totes Gebirge.
The highest mountains of the Ennstal Alps are the Hochtor (2'369 m), Grosser Buchstein (2'224 m) and the Grosser Pyhrgas (2'244 m).
Within die Ennstal Alps is the Gesäuse National Park.
