The Kongur, also known as Kongur Tagh, is the highest peak of the Pamir Range. It is situated in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The second highest peak of the Pamir is the Muztagh Ata and the third highest the Pik Ismoil Somoni in Tajikistan.
The Kongur is surrounded by a small subrange, known as the Kongur Shan. It is after the Tichir Mir (7'708 m) in the Hindu Kush (Pakistan) the second highest peak outside the Himalaya/Karakorum. The mountain is very well visible from the Karakoram Highway.
First ascent: 1981 by a British expedition (Chris Bonington, Al Rouse, Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker).
