Montes de Oca is a mountainous area located between the municipalities of Maicao and Albania. It belongs to the Cordillera de Perijá, an extension of the Cordillera Oriental on the border with Venezuela.
It was declared a protected forest reserve through the 0017 Agreement, approved by the Governing Board of Corpoguajira, on December 27, 2007. It covers an area of approximately 10'000 hectares.
They are one of the leading providers of water in the region, which is why their main and tributary streams are utilized for various uses, especially to meet the needs of agricultural and human use of the area, in the areas of influence of the different basins and headers, benefiting about 150'000 inhabitants.
