The Poás volcano is located about 30 kilometres in the north of the Costa Rican capital San José. The main crater at 2'300 metres (approximately 1.7 km wide and 290–300 m deep) has a round hot-water lake (Laguna Caliente) at the bottom, which is very acidic and fumarolic. The dormant Botos crater with the Laguna Botos, 400 metres in diameter and filled with rainwater forms the volcanos highest point.
