Ghoubbet El Kharab is a cove of about 200m depth and is separated from the Gulf of Tadjoura by a strong current. It is surrounded by mountains and cliffs which separates it from the Lake Assal. Rising out of Ghoubbet El Kharab are two volcanic islands referred to as Devil’s Islands.

On 27 June 1977, Djibouti gained independence from France. At that time, it was the last of France’s colonies in Africa. The country changed its name to Djibouti, after its biggest city, and it became known as the Republic of Djibouti.
