The inactive stratovolcano Chimborazo is Ecuador's highest summit.

The Chimborazo is located in the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes of central Ecuador, 150 km south-southwest of the capital Quito. Chimborazo's majestic summit rises 2'500 m above the surrounding highlands with a 20 km wide base.

The Chimborazo has five named peaks (cumbres).
Chumbre Whymper 6'310 m (main, west peak), Chumbre Veintmilla 6'267 m (northwest peak), Chumbre Norte 6'200 m, Chumbre Politecnico 5'820 m (central peak) and the Chumbre Nicolas Martinez 5'570 m (east peak).

First ascent: 1880 by Edward Whymper (English), Jean-Antoine und Louis Carrel (Italian).
Edward Whymper is well known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in Switzerland (1865) and the Barre des Écrins in France (1864).

In 1920 the Italian pilot Elia Liut made the first flight over the Andes in Ecuador, traveling from Guayaquil on the coast to Cuenca in the mountains. For this he used a HD.1, war surplus, which he named "Telégrafo I" in honour to the newspaper that sponsored the raid. José Abel Castillo was the owner of the newspaper "Telegrafo I".
