The Öxarárfoss waterfall is a typical waterfall of the fault type, despite the fact, that it has been formed trough human agency. The Starlungsaga describes early icelanders diverting the river Öxará so that it fell into Allmannahjá and thrue Þingvellir. The Öxarárfoss waterfall is not high, but it falls beautifully over an even ledge and down into a bouldered area, producing a great deal of mist. The Öxarárfoss waterfall is situated within Þingvellir Nationalpark and is thus protected.
