The Lake Toba was formed by the Toba supervolcano.  

The Toba supervolcano has produced the largest known volcanic eruption on earth during the past 2 million years. The eruption led to the final formation of one of earths largest calderas, the 35x100 km wide Toba caldera. Lake Toba is known as the Earth’s largest volcanic lake. Samosir island covers an area of 640 square kilometres. Mt. Ribi 1'713 m) is the highest mountain on the island and rises 806 metres above the lake.
