The Tondano Caldera-Lake is the largest lake in the province of North Sulawesi. It is located 600 metres above sea level. The lake is surrounded by mountains of 700 metres height, namely Lembean, Kaweng, Tampusu and Masarang.

Within the Tondano Caldera are located the active volcanoes Soputan (1'784 m), Sempu (1'549 m), Lokon (1'580 m), Empung (1'340 m) and Mahawu (1'324 m).

In the east of the caldera is situated the highest peak on Sulawesi, the Klabat volcano (1'995 m / any historic eruptions).
