The Chausu-dake (1'915 m) is situated in the northeastern part of the Nikko Nationalpark in northern part of Tochigi Prefecture (Kantō region) and borders at Fukushima Prefecture (Tōhoku region).
It forms with the Sanbonyari dake (1'916 m), Asahi (1'896 m), Nangetsu-san (1'776 m) and Kuro-odani (1'589 m) the Nasu Mountains, which belong the the 100 famous Japanese mountains and are known as Nasu-Go-Take (Nasu-Five-Peaks).
Only the Chausu-dake in known as an active volcano and started its eruption almost 600 thousand years ago.
