Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Shichiri beach in Sagami Province
Sagami Province was a province of Japan located in what is today the central and western Kanagawa Prefecture. Shichiri, the Seven-League Beach is located on the northern shore of the Sagami Bay.
The print depicts a view from an angle that conceals much of its rolling dunes and sparse cactuslike plants. Stretching between Kamakura and Fujisawa, it is a well known pleasure resort. At the bend of the beach is a village with houses covered with thatched roofs, probably Koshigoe. The island of Enoshima, a noted pilgrimage site for devotees of Benzaiten is visible at the far left in the ocean. Enoshima is today part of the mainland city of Fujisawa and is linked by a 600 metres long bridge.
(Enoshima is also depicted on image 17 of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji)
