The about 154 km long Charyn Canyon is carved by the river Charyn through many layers of various kinds of sedimentary formations. It is situated about 200 kilometres east of Almaty.
The most ancient ones of them have an age of about 12 million years. In some places the height of the vertical cliffs of the canyon reaches 300 metres.
