The Ustyurt Nature Reserve is located in the south of the Mangystausky district in the Eralievsky region in western Kazakhstan. It covers an area of 2'230 square kilometres and was founded on 12th July 1984. It includes the western edge of the Ustyurt Plateau and protects flora, fauna and the Ustyurt Plateau's escarpments, the Chinks (local name of this unique natural escarpments consists of limestone and chalk). This giant formations rising up to 340 metres stretch hundreds of kilometres to the north and the south. The most famous of the plateau edge are Mount Bokhty, the Bozzhira Massif, the Mount Sherkhala and the Three Brothers (Tri Brata).
