The Lac Ifni is located at an altitude of 2'300 metres and in a linear distance of 5 kilometres to the highest mountain of the High Atlas range, the Jbel Toubkal, 4'167 m.
The lake was formed by a hudge mudslide, the waters of the Lake seeps into the rock to re-emerge a few hundred metres down in the valley, where its waters are used for the fields.
