Namibia map Namib Sand Dunes Sossusvlei

The Namib Desert contains a number of active dune fields. The largest of them forms a 34'000 square kilometres sand sea, more or less between 23° S. lat und 27° S. lat.

All along the coast between Lüderitz and Swakopmund are sand dunes, sculptured by the wind into fantastic shapes and preventing inland communications. The colours of the dunes are ranging from pink to vivid orange and some of them belong to the highest dunes in the world. The biggest is the Dune 7, also known as "Big Daddy", 383 metres in height.

The Namid Desert contains a number of active dune fields. All major dune types are represented in the Namib where they are distributed in three longitudinal zones - coastal, central and eastern margin.

Cresentic dunes, which include barchan and traverse types, are found in the costal belt, where the unidirectional, high-energy southerly wind regime is dominant. Where vegetation occurs in this zone parabolic, hummock and shadow dunes may also develop. Farther inland the strength of the southerly winds decreases and, combined with the high-velocity but low-frequency north-easterly winter berg winds, has led the formation of compound and complex linear dunes. These, in turn, give way to large star and low partly-vegetated reticulate dunes along the eastern margin, which indicate a complex, probably multi-directional, winds regime. The net movement of dunes is generally northward, pointing to the overall importance of the southerly winds regime in this long, narrow net movement of dunes is generally northward, pointing to the overall importance of the southerly wind regime in this long, narrow desert.

In the southern and northern Namib, barchans move up to 75 metres a year compared to about 10 metres year in the central region, whereas the linear dunes extend northwards at rates of up to two metres a year. Text: Post of South-West Africa, Dr. J.D.Ward

The Sesriem Canyon is about 1 kilometres long and up to 30 metres deep. It is situated close to the Sesriem settlement, which is also the entrance for Sossusvlei. The Canyon was formed during the last million years by the Tschauchab river which flows during rare times towards the Sossusvlei salt pan.

The stamp is showing the Tschauchab River bed and the well known salt pan, known as Sossusvlei. Sossusvlei was created by the Tschauchab River, which is dry most of the year. It flows to the Namib every 5 to 10 years, but never reaches the Atlantic Ocean.
