Milford Sound (Mitre Peak) - Issues of Private Postal Services

The Milford Sound is situated within the Fiordland Nationalpark in the southwestern part of New Zealands South Island. The Milford Sound is an about 15 kilometres long fjord surrounded by steep mountains.

In the north there are situated the Elephant (1'518 m) and the Lion (1'302 m), which both are connected by a ridge to the 2000 metres high Pembroke Peak. The Cascade Peak (1'221 m) is connected by a ridge to the Mills Peak (1'831 m).

In the south are situated the Mitre Peak (1'692 m) and the Mt. Philipps (1'469 m).

The stamps of the 1898 "First Pictorials" were all engraved by Waterlow and Sons, England. The first issue was also printed by Waterlow and Sons, with later supplies being printed in New Zealand from new plates also supplied by Waterlow and Sons. New Zealand Post reissued the First Pictorial series in the year 1998 "Centenary of the 1898 Pictorials".

This stamp was a reproduction, at a slightly smaller size with perforation 11 of the 1898 stamp. 

The stamp is existing as well from 1903
"Penny Universal" (dark-lila) with watermark and various perforations 11, 14, and 11:14 mixed.

1899, "Wellington Printing", bluegreen and grey-green with perforation 11.

Te Wahipounamu is an UNESCO World Heritage Area. It includes the four Nationalparks; Westland-Nationalpark, Mount-Cook-Nationalpark, Mount-Aspiring-Nationalpark and the Fiordland-Nationalpark.
