The Mount Tongariro is an active volcanic complex in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. It forms together with the volcanoes Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe the Tongariro Nationalpark. The Tongariro consists of 12 cones and Ngauruhoe is geologically a vent of the Tongariro.

The stamp is showing a view from the top of the Ngauruhoe volcano, across the south crater of the Tongariro volcano, towards the Rotopaunga crater with the Blue Lake.

The Tongariro Nationalpark had the honour of playing Mordor and the Emyn Muil in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
