The design shows a steam locomotive at Lake Managua and the Momotombo volcano in the background.
The series of 13 stamps were issued on January 1st 1900. In 1902 additional three stamps issued without the printers imprint AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO N.Y. at the foot of the stamp. Of the series are existing numerous variations of surcharged stamps, (surcharge inverted, surcharge double, surcharge double and one inverted, ...).
It is not known, if all this surcharged stamps were postaly used in Nicaragua at that time. Somewhere i read "The Nicaraguan postal authority was happy to produce other surcharges at the request of stamp dealers".
In view of the large quantity of such stamps, the overprintings are not listed.
