The Bucegi Range is situated in the south of the city Brasov and in the west of the city Busteni and the Prahova valley in the Southern Carpathians, in Romania.

Its highest point is the Omul Peak at 2'505 metres.

The stamp was issued in the series "International Year of Mountains".

It shows a view from the Prahova valley towards Caraiman peak of the Bucegi Range.
The stamp was issued in sheet together with an other mountain-landscape stamp, which is classfied as unknown.

In the east, the Caraiman peak has a very steep slope. On its top is the Bucegi Plateau. Here wind and rain has created rock formations such as the "Sphinx" and "Babele". On the Caraiman peak is situated a monument called "The Heroes Cross" as well. It is 29.5 metres high and the arms length is 14 metres.

Romania 1971, "Babele" rock formation on the Bucegi Plateau.

The about 3,5 metres high rockformation is called "Babele" (meaning old woman). The formation is shaped in limestone, enduring in a harsh environment with snow all year round, with temperatures around 2.6 degrees Celsius below zero, strong winds and frequent storms in winter.

The Romanian Sphinx is a rock limestone-formation which, seen from a certain angle, has a strong human resemblance, with distinct lips and a prominent forehead. It measures eight metres high and 12 metres wide, a similar size with the world famous Sphinx of Gizeh (Egypt).

e stamp was issued in miniature sheets of 6 stamps and in numbered souvenirsheets (quantity is not known).

The stamps from the souvenirsheets differ from the stamps of the miniaturesheets in the quantity of the additional vertical perforation holes. Stamps of souvenirsheet have five and stamps from the miniaturesheets have thirteen such perforation holes in the stamp image.
