In the about 70 kilometres long Făgăraș Range there are the highest mountains of the Southern Carpathians. Its highest peak is Moldoveanu (2'544 m), which is the highest mountain in Romania as well.

The Lake Balea is a glacier lake situated at 2,034 m of altitude. It is accessible by car on the Transfăgărășan road during the summer, and the rest of the year by a cable car from the "Balea Cascada" chalet.
