The city of Pjatigorsk has been the administrative center of the North Caucasian Federal District of Russia. The name Pjatigorsk means “five mountains city”. The city is located at an altitude of about 525 m above sea level and about 90 kilometres in the north of Mt. Elbrus. The five-domed mountain Beshtau (1'401 m) is the highest point in the area around the city.
