The Ngorongoro is a conservation area and an UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 180 km (112 miles) in the west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania.The Ngorongoro Crater is a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. The crater was formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed some two to three million years ago. It is 610 m deep and its floor covers 260 km². The height of the original volcano range is estimated from 4'500 to 5'800 metres.
