The active Augustine Volcano is situated about 284 kilometres in the southwest of Anchorage. It forms an island in the southwestern part of the Cook Inlet and is part of the Aleutian volcanic arc. The volcano was named by Captain James Cook on St. Augustine's day (May 26) in 1778.
