The Great Smoky Mountains National Park protects a mountain ridge along the Tennessee – North Carolina border. The park was established 1934 and protects an area of 2'114 square kilometres. The highest elevation is the Clingmans Dome at 2'025 m.

It was issued to honor a convention of the Society of Philatelic Americans, held in Asheville, North Carolina. The convention was held from August 26-28, 1937.
