The Jemez Mountains is a volcanic field situated in north central of New Mexico in the Rio Grande Rift. In the midst of the mountains is the famous 22 kilometres wide Valles Caldera.
It was formed by two large eruptions 1.2 - 1.7 million years ago and is one of the smaller supervolcanoes (VEI - 7).
The highest summit is the Mount Chicoma (3'524 m).
