California map Mono Lake

The Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, formed at least 760,000 years ago.

Mono Lake is an endorheic basin, meaning that water flows into the lake, but the lake has no outflow. The lake has a very high level of salinity, more than twice the level of the ocean. It is famous for its iconic limestone Tufa Towers along the southern shoreline. Volcanic activity has been ongoing and most recent volcanic eruptions occurred only 400 years ago and formed the Paoha Island in the center of the lake.
