The Mount Washington is a 1’917 m high mountain in New Hampshire. The Mount Washington rack railway ascends the mountain beginning at an elevation of 820 metres above sea. The summit station is at an elevation of 1’917 m. It was the very first mountain rack railway in the world. (Inauguration in July 3, 1869). The first mountain rack railway in europe was the Vitznau Rigi rack Railway to Mount Rigi in Switzerland, which opened in 1871.
