The Axenstrasse connects the villages Brunnen in the canton Schwyz with Fluelen in the canton Uri. The first road along the steep cliffs on the east side of Lake Uri is existing since 1776. The southern part of the road was famous for many open passages with rock galleries and numerous openings in the west tunnel walls viewing Lake Uri. Since the sounthern part of the Axenstrasse was renovated between 1975 and 1990, only a small part of the old spectacular road is existing and served as a hiking trail between Tellsplatte and Flüelen.
